| [b] One step closer to the guide [message #78779] |

Back, many years ago, I wondered how the guide looked. The descriptions
in the books is vague, and in places, seems self-contradictory.
But then I saw a Palm Pilot, and I was hooked. That was pretty close,
thought I. (maybe need a slide tray for the 100 or so buttons?)
Whatever the case, it wasn't perfect.
---
Ford flipped the switch which he saw was now marked "Mode Execute
Ready" instead of the now old-fashioned "Access Standby" which
had so long ago replaced the appallingly stone-aged "Off".
---
Switches that can relabel themselves? Check it out:

Colour me impressed. I want one.

The packaging for the Infocom game had a picture of the guide on it. It was
just how I had visualized it when I read the books. If you download the
'manual' on this page, you'll see it on page 13 of the PDF file.

There's something exceptionally desirous about it, isn't there.

I've got two copies of the game (one for DOS, one for AppleII), and
never thought that visualisation of it was even close to right. (basic
problem: too much space devoted to keys, and not enough space devoted
to the display)
The guide has been also visualised in the Illustrated HHG - where it's
awfull (being poorly designed to be ergonomic to the human hand.
Right-hand even. gah!), in the comic books (no lasting impression that
I can recall), the TV series (so bulky!), and now the movie (which
follows a form not dissimilar to my own crude sketches made many years
ago, except I had it open clamshell, not book-like, and be two screens,
not one.
Anyways, I didn't post to discuss former visualisations of the Guide,
but to discuss technology which reminds me of descriptions from the
books :)

I've heard of Israel refered to as a "one disck country."
Can't believe the Russians are any worse than that.

I have politics on the brain. I saw it as a donkey and wondered
why they didn't have an elephant to.

Good catch! Also, a fun product, and worth looking at just
because it's an interesting way to stretch the state of the
art. I'm hoping those keys have good wear characteristics.
Making contacts that can bounce up and down many thousands
of times and still transmit the information to draw buttons
seems to me like a huge engineering challenge. If they pull
it off, I have a lot of respect for their skills.

Downloading's legal in Russia. Does that answer your question? :-)

Wouldn't be much of a fun internet if downloading was illegal though.
I can't wait for some 'downloading is illegal' stupid law to arrive on
the books somewhere.

a what?!
seeing as I am at the moment in Israel, I can't help wondering, what
that might mean... I guess the connectivity and availablility might be
slightly less than what one would expect in a modern industrial nation
(especially the fewness of internet cafes is maddening), but "one disc
country"?
Haven't been to russia. can't tell anything about that...
so long, Malte

I think the idea is that somebody buys one copy of the program, and
then they share it with all their friends. Those people share it
with their friends, and by the time the infection has run its course
everybody in IL has a copy of their own... And the starving artists
that wrote the program get the royalties from one sale.

Then they just have to set the price to cover for all those illegal
copies!
Oh wait, something's wrong here...
